| | thejesusmyth | Jan 1, 6:26pm | Has anyone heard of something like this?
My wife has epilepsy. But this was not always so...or maybe it was, as the neurologists claim. My wife did not have a grand mal until she was 25 years old. No history of seizures before that. Unfortunately, she was driving at the time. I have not found anyone who has had no history of seizures then begins to have them in adulthood. She is now 34 and on Kepra and Lamictal. Both suck, as they have a tendency to make her lethargic and gain weight.
It is a hell going to work for 10-12 hours everyday knowing that my wife is the sole caregiver for my daughter and has had seizures while on her meds, although both times I have been there. |

| Cotita | Jan 2, 9:18am | Late epileptic seizures are not as rare as you might think, though the average show their first seizure in their teens, some (particularly in grand mal) may show their first seizure in adulthood, as in your wife's case. Perhaps a second opinion concerning your wife's medication could be helpful, since not all anticonvulsive prescriptions tend to drowsiness. Also, Topiramate (just as an example) actually helps you loosing weight, besides aiding seizure control. Topiramate is usually prescribed along with another anticonvulsant medicine, so the best is to consult your doctor or perhaps another one in order to make a correct combination.
Also some precautions, such as a low stimulants(such as caffeine and energy drinks)and low (and practically null) alcohol diet, as well as an 8 hr sleep routine with and a regular meal schedule are the key to reduce and even avoid seizures. Remember that any irritant to the brain, such as low sugar, poor sleep or alcohol are potentials seizure inductors. |

| Artisan | Feb 1, 2:26pm | | I started having seizures in my late 40's about 5 years ago with no previous history. I thought at the time it was caused by stress and lack of sleep because at the time I was working particularly hard. I only ever had about 4 seizures in total (Grand mal)and was put on Eplim 2500mg then reduced to 1500mg after a while (which is what I am supposed to take now) I don't, I actually only take 500mg a day and sometimes none. I took up tai chi, started riding my bike and stopped worrying and working so hard for the company. I also got myself a shed and set up my own space with my guitars set up where I just go and play, something I had not done for years. I cut down on coffee during the day but still drink wine and beer. I haven't experienced any aura's or petit mal's for a long time now and am thinking of telling the doc I want to try giving up the medication. |

| Winged-Feet | Mar 5, 9:45pm | | Although not as dramatic or potentially disruptive as are your wife's seizures, I experienced my first seizures - partial temporal lobe with aphasia, auditory hallucinations, absence - when in my mid-thirties. Probably related to systemic lupus. Has your wife been checked for auto-immune diseases like lupus? Although anti-seizure medication is typical, if a cause such as an autoimmune disease can be found, possibly treating it might help alleviate the seizures? Also, how old is your daughter, as you are concerned for her well-being? And a thought - even though your wife has the potential of a seizure, there are many other things - good and sometimes bad - that can happen. Might it help you to alleviate some of your own stress and worry by keeping the variances of life in mind so as to not focus too much worry on your wife's potential of having a seizure? And in suggesting this, I am not discounting your very real concern. I am only thinking that you may be able to cope with things a little more easily if you aren't feeling overwhelmed by your worry over one possibility so much so that it takes on a life of its own. My best to you in your circumstances. |
