Medication causing weight gain?

Ev77Feb 15, 2:03pm
I am another person who developed epilepsy quite late in life, I'm 31 and had my first grand mal seizure at 28. I don't know about family history of epilepsy as I'm adopted. I've always been what yuou might (nicely) call chubby but I have been trying to loose weight for a long time now and I think that as I'm exercising every day and genuinely watching what I eat it should be working - but it's not. I take Keppra and Lamictal and on asking my doctor she said weight gain was not a recognised side effect but I don't think I believe her!!

I am so sorry that you have not received a reply to this question yet.

From the website for Keppra: "Keppraź is generally well tolerated but may not be for everyone. Keppraź may cause extreme sleepiness, tiredness, weakness or problems with muscle coordination. You should call your healthcare provider right away if you experience any of these problems or if you experience mood and behavior changes such as aggression, agitation, anger, anxiety, apathy, mood swings, depression, hostility, and irritability. A few people may get psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and unusual behavior. A few people may get thoughts of suicide. The most common side effects with Keppra in adults are sleepiness, weakness, dizziness, and infection. In children, the most common side effects are sleepiness, accidental injury, hostility, irritability, and weakness."

And Lamictal: " Prescription LAMICTAL Tablets are not for everyone. Most people who take LAMICTAL tolerate it well. Common side effects with LAMICTAL include dizziness, headache, blurred or double vision, lack of coordination, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, tremor, and rash. LAMICTAL may cause other side effects not listed here. If you develop any side effects or symptoms you are concerned about or need more information, call your doctor."

Lamictal states that there may be other side effects that are not listed here. The tell-tale sign of BOTH drugs is the sleepiness that you may be experiencing. I would bet that you are quite a bit less active than you were before medications.

If that is not the case, I would ask your doctor about Topamax. My wife was on the same combination of drugs that you are currently on and gained quite a bit of weight. She asked about Topamax (thanks to someone on this forum) and switched from Lamictal to Topamax. She has begun to lose the weight.
